BIOGRAPHY
Jay Hennick is the Founder and CEO of FirstService Corporation, a global leader in the rapidly growing real estate services sector, providing a variety of services in commercial real estate, residential property management and property services. As one of the largest property managers in the world, FirstService manages more than 2.3 billion square feet of residential and commercial properties through its three industry-leading service platforms: Colliers International, the third largest global player in commercial real estate services; FirstService Residential Management, the largest manager of residential communities in North America; and Property Services, including Field Asset Services, one of America's largest providers of property preservation and distressed asset management and FS Brands, one of North America's largest providers of property services through franchise networks. FirstService generates over US$2.2 billion in annual revenues and has more than 20,000 employees worldwide.
Before establishing FirstService, Jay completed a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree at York University and then a Juris Doctorate of Laws (J.D.) from the University of Ottawa. He began his career as a corporate lawyer and then partnered with a large Toronto law firm serving many of North America's leading corporations, entrepreneurs and business leaders. In 2011, Jay was awarded a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa from York University.
During the late 1980's, Jay sought to establish a company of his own. As a teenager, he showed his entrepreneurial spirit by founding Superior Pools, a company that provided lifeguards and other staffing requirements for swimming pools and recreation facilities for apartments, condominiums, hotels and academic institutions. His investment in and leadership of Superior Pools created the foundation to fund his education and career as a lawyer.
After raising money from family and friends, Jay established FirstService in 1989, with Superior Pools becoming the first service the company offered. In 1999, Jay merged Superior Pools with American Pool Enterprises, and today the combined entity is the largest commercial swimming pool management company in North America and a subsidiary of FirstService.
In 1998, at the age of 41, Jay received Ontario's Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Consumer Services as well as Canada's coveted Entrepreneur of the Year award for creative service integration. In December 2001, Jay was named Canada's CEO of the year by Canadian Business Magazine.
Together with his wife Barbara, Jay established The Jay and Barbara Hennick Foundation which contributes annually to a variety of causes primarily in the areas of education, health care and medical research.
Among others, Jay and Barbara Hennick established: (i) The Hennick Center for Business and Law, a joint program of the Osgoode Hall Law School and the Schulich School of Business at York University. The Hennick Centre is at the forefront of business and legal issues in Canada and is lead by the former Chairman of the Ontario Securities Commission together with an advisory committee comprising some of Canada's leading academics and business leaders; (ii) The Jay and Barbara Hennick Foundation for Medical Research at the Mount Sinai Hospital; and (iii) The Jay Hennick LL.B.-MBA Program at the University of Ottawa Law School.
Jay currently serves as the Co-Chairman of the Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation. He is also the Vice-Chairman and Director of The Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.
